Music Monday :: Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" - Interpret a song (Nebberz post!)

I would like to take the time to share my interpretation of one of many songs that have been influential in my life. It is a fairly well-known one and I still remember some of my first times hearing it, thinking it was interesting and "different" but never paid much more attention to it than that. Many years later, I listened to the song again while under alternative influences and what I heard that time, left me sort of stunned. This interpretation, as with most any artistic interpretation, will unlikely represent the true meaning that the artists may have originally intended (if they even knew!). However, it will be correct in the sense of what it has meant to me, and for me it certainly has a strong spiritual message. Parts of what I say may not make sense until you take some of the later lyrics into consideration, or I'm crazy. (:

Gorillaz
Clint Eastwood

(In researching others' thoughts on the meaning of this song, one recurring theme that comes up was of course drugs. Many would focus on the "sunshine in a bag, I'm useless" section, and considered that to be someone under the influence and lazy. Though this is certainly possible, there is a reference to the movie The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. (excellent movie by the way) In the movie, the kid asks “you gonna be alright?” to which he responds “Ya, kid. I got sunshine in a bag.” referring to the gold he has in his bag. One of a few likely reasons the song received it's title. Other reasons for the title include the fact that there is a Jamaican Reggae artist by the name of Clint Eastwood who it seems they heard of while recording the album there. Additonally, in the background of the song, they use a melodica which Damon Albarn of Gorillaz plays throughout the track, and he thought it sounded a lot like the score to the Clint Eastwood's movie A Fistful of Dollars. Also just came across the fact on wikipedia that David also plays for the alternative supergroup The Good, The Bad and the Queen, so he certainly appears to be quite the fan of Clint Eastwood.)

Here is the video in case you have not seen it yet.

[Hook]
Oh oh oh oh oh
I ain't happy,
I'm feeling glad
(Things may be sucky now, but he's feeling some relief, maybe somewhat because of the next line.)
I got sunshine in a bag
(Sunshine in a bag can be a metaphor for whatever makes us happy. Medicinal plants being one likely option especially when considering the fact that plants are partly comprised of light/sun energy through photosynthesis. He may feel he literally has "sunshine" in a bag.)
I'm useless but
(In this day and age, with the way things are going and the systems that are in place, there is little place for people like him but)
Not for long
(that is about to change.)
The future is coming on
(The current way of stagnant socities, conglomerates, and corrupted governments is beginning to deteriorate. The time is coming when people like him are going to be far from useless, and in fact may be pivotal.)

[Hook]

[Verse 1 with Del the Funkee Homosapien]
Yeah... Ha Ha!
Finally someone let me out of my cage
(At this point in the music video, a genie or spirit appears above Russel. He appears a bit staticy like a TV station, I believe the point being that the entity is of a different frequency than our reality, representing a spirit guide or some sort of cosmic power.)
Now, time for me is nothing cos I'm counting no age
(Time is an idea invented by humans, this being does not pay attention nor is he affected by such concepts. On his plane, things might work very differently.)
Now I couldn't be there
(They know that once we are aware of them, we will most likely experience disbelief at first.)
Now you shouldn't be scared
(But it is a benevolent being that is...)
I'm good at repairs
(here to help fix the wrongs many of us are experiencing.)
And I'm under each snare
(Vibrations are a large part of what exists, even on our so-called physical plane, without the vibrations of light waves, we would see nothing. Even solid material objects are made up of bouncing atoms. This being exists from such vibrations, an example they give being the vibrations created underneath a struck drum snare.)
Intangible
(Not a part of the physical word, immaterial.)
Bet you didn't think so I command you to
(We have been lulled to sleep and rendered unaware of these things, we have forgotten, it commands us to remember what true thought is.)
Panoramic view
(The big picture, to think beyond ourselves, and beyond only what we see around us.)
Look I'll make it all manageable
(They will explain these concepts to us simply and help us to handle them.)
Pick and choose
(We have the option to either stand up and accept these changes...)
Sit and lose
(or to sit and do nothing, and fade it to the purple hazy twilight)
All you different crews
(he's talking to everyone as a whole, no matter how much we would like to consider ourselves separate from one another.)
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
(Many believe they are already thinking for themselves and calling the shots in their lives, but the messages sent through television, news, radio has more impact on our choices and "free will" than we would like to believe.)
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
(We watch so much television, we have forgotten who we are and fantasize about being a part of what we idolize.)
Like you lit the fuse
(To make it big and be one of the "awesome" celebrities that so many worship.)
You think it's fictional
(We may believe all these things being said are not real)
Mystical? Maybe
(Maybe we might want to just write it all off as mystical nonsense. That might be close to the truth though, yet still important.)
Spiritual
(Believing it's crazy nonsense doesn't change the fact that we are likely moving into an age of spiritual awakening and all that nonsense might end up being an integral part of our new reality.)
Hearable
(Though many of us are still unaware of these changes, messages, other vibrations etc., it is possible to hear it to those willing to listen. Meditation comes to mind. Alternative medicines are another way to become aware of it.)
What appears in you is a clearer view cos you're too crazy
(Once we are aware of these things, everything becomes much more clear, to the vast majority though, we will be shunned and considered crazy for our newfound views, especially if these realizations occurred through the use of plants. Or just be written off as a flower child hippie.)
Lifeless
To know the definition for what life is
(Without dark, light would not exist. If all there was were light, we would have no idea it even existed without comparison. For us to understand life and truly live, we must also learn to understand death/lifelessness. To accept death and truly let go, rids us of our fears and opens up the path to awakening/nirvana/life as it truly is.)
Priceless
For you because I put you on the hype shit
(They realize that once we are aware of what they are saying, we will probably find humor in the irony of them using the same media to reach out to us (television, radio) that so many have abused to manipulate our thoughts and opinions.)
You like it?
(in the end it's worth it though, isn't it?)
Gunsmokin' righteous with one toke
(All it takes is one instance with a hallucinogen, and then hear something like this, to get us up in arms about what humanity is doing and wanting to change things.)
Psychic among those
Possess you with one go
(For those who are psychic/ready to awaken, one toke and/or one experience with a song/message such as this one, begins the awakening process (possesses) even if we are unaware of it happening. Being psychic does not necessarily mean you are awakened or understand life, but certainly increases the possibility of such.)

[Hook]

[Verse 2]
The essence the basics
(The essence of life are the very basic things (music, food, water, love, family etc.))
Without it you make it
(If we don't have the things we truly need to give quality of life, we don't go to a store to buy it, we make it ourselves. Wanting things and buying them overly complicates life as it brings things such as currency, stocks, supply and demand, trade embargos, and war into existence. Not having to rely on others is far more satisfying.)
Allow me to make this
Childlike in nature
(To explain it in a way a child might see the world, simple.)
Rhythm
You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
(We are all born with the ability to do these things. To create music, dance, love, to sense and understand vibrations and how they create reality, and that to believe we are unable to do these things is completely false.)
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child apiece
Every cloud you see
(This vibrational being/spirit guide/higher power, is a part of everything. All of existence is connected no matter how much we may see things as being separate. This includes ourselves, it and us are a part of the very same energy.)
You see with your eyes
(The reason we find this difficult to understand, is because our eyes see things as existing separately and that is one of the primary ways we look and attempt to understand the world. Because of this, we limit most of our understanding to only our immediate sorroundings.)
I see destruction and demise
(They are able to see life more easily through other means, sensing vibrations or perhaps simply seeing through the mind. They are able to see the bigger picture and all of the problems at once that many of us ignore.)
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin' enterprise
(That includes seeing through the disguises of those that pretend to help us while having alterior motives. Many from "holy" faiths and organized religions keeping people living in fear of being damned for eternity, or denying male/female equality. Political groups who claim to support freedom while waging war and stripping others of such rights. Law enforcements who are supposed to be focused on personal safety, but instead are arresting massive amounts of individuals, most for nonviolent crimes.)
Now I'm sucked into your lives
Through Russ, though not his muscles but the percussion he provides
with me as a guide
(All of these things are ok though, because we have been made aware of their existence through things like the very song we are listening to)
But y'all can see me now cos you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
(This was made possible because we stopped focusing on what we could see with sight, and instead saw with our mind)
That's the inner
(We learned to see with inner sight and not just external)
So I'm gonna stick around with Russ and be a mentor
(But there is still a lot to learn, so we will get to keep learning)
Bust a few rhymes so mother fuckers
Remember where the thought is
(They will continue spreading their message through groups such as this one, so that more people will become aware and learn to think.)
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless
(They are doing this, so that when these enterprises do fall apart, many of us will not panic and be prepared for it and at least be somewhat aware of we will need to do to continue living. Focusing on the basics for example.)
Feelings, sensations that you thought were dead
(Most of these things are child-like in nature, that means we knew all of these things already when we were children, magic was easy to believe in. We are taught to forget these things, to believe it is silly non-sense.
No squealing, remember
(that it's all in your head)
(but now that we are aware of these feelings, these vibrations again, be careful who we talk to about them. Remember, the vast majority will think of us as crazy drug people if we spout such nonsense to them. It scares those that are not ready to accept such ideas. Best to let them discover on their own in their own way rather than trying to force others to believe what we are now aware of. That is how religions and cults start, someone makes these great discoveries, tells everyone about them and what they have to do, the message then starts to get twisted, especially hundreds of years after the person dies, and then we have the same problems as before)

[Hook]

I'm Going to Be an Awesome Doula :D

dou·la  [doo-luh]
nouna woman who assists women during labor and after childbirth.

Supposed to be making posts for the Wabi-Sabi Wedding Day blog, but I'm learning doula stuff instead. Both super important things, but new babies are more important. :D

I'm watching this lady's videos, she's pretty cool! She likes "elevator speeches" too. I think everyone should have an elevator speech, even if they aren't entrepreneurs or self-employed. :D

So I had a natural childbirth 1-1/2 years ago, and it was Awesome. Stark contrast with the hospital birth I had almost 8 years ago now. The accepted American thought on child birth seems to be that birth is scary and bad and horribly painful.

hospital birth in 2003 when I was 18

I was scared back in the day at the hospital birth. I tried to read books and magazines to educate myself about what was going to happen, but while I was pregnant I just tried not to think about the birth... you can't control a situation like that anyway. I didn't have much support, either. And when it was time for the birth, they just whisked me through what seemed like an assembly line, doing all sorts of procedures and applying all sorts of monitors, laying me on my back on the bed, giving me stuff to make contractions stronger, more frequent, and more painful, while generally just being annoyed with me, it seemed.

Luckily we made it out without a C-section, but I almost gave into the epidural - thank goodness labor had progressed too far by then, or else I probably would have ended up having a C-section if the muscles I needed to control were numb. :/

Honestly, apart from the great awesomeness of bringing my first son into the world, it was a really bad experience. So when I became pregnant again, I decided to do everything I could do avoid repeating the same thing.

And it was great.

home birth in 2010 :D

My second son was born at home in a birth pool with a midwife and her assistant present, along with the truely awesome Nebberz. I used Hypnobabies to help really just ease the fear - that's where most of the pain comes from I think. Everybody thought I was sleeping when I had contractions, I just zoned out so hard. I don't feel as if I was under hypnosis though, it was really more like deep meditation.

Anyway, I kind of am infuriated that so many women don't know that an awesome, calm birth is totally possible - and I really want to help "spread the word" and help anybody who needs it. So when I met this girl in a local sustainability group, I decided to let her know I'm interested in helping. Since she's interested in sustainability, and she and her husband were in the Peace Corps and all that stuff, they're already pretty "in the know" about birth.

Anyway, her due date was last Wednesday!!! So baby could be coming at any minute. I get to be the chauffeur while she's in labor! I'm so nervous - I'm the only pregnant person I've ever really known, lol. I've hung out with this girl a few times since she agreed to let me help.... but this will be the first birth I'm going to be around! I'm so excited and nervous, and I hope I really do help! :)

Wish me luck... :)

More wedding posts on Wabi-Sabi Wedding Day coming soon! :D

Music Monday :: Mimosa's "Come Around" Remix

Alright, I confess, I'm finally starting to get into reggae a little bit. There have been a few more palatable releases lately thanks to the Rise of Bob Marley. I've always wanted to like reggae, it just... doesn't keep my attention usually though. *shrugs* Not that this is all reggae. This is Mimosa. This... is... dubstep!!!

What? I dunno. Happy Monday?

Q and A: Byakuya on Kids and Stuff

You may have read my "About Me" at some point... I post it almost everywhere. You might call it my "elevator pitch." It goes something like this:

"I'm an unschooling mom in pursuit of minimalist and (relatively) moneyless lifestyle."

I don't really talk about any of that much here at Technicolor Typecast - they are kind of difficult topics to address (and I kind of like having a little bit of a break here too :). What we're doing is actually really awesome though (in my opinion anyway), and I hope I get around to sharing more about it someday!

Back on the 3rd of July I wrote a tiny bit about what we've been doing and invited questions. Here's some of what I wrote:

"...Yes, we are a family of 4 living off of $800/mo (US$) plus whatever else we can scrape up! It can be done, and it doesn't have to be That Bad. We're kind of hoping to be an example for others to show you can "have everything" without a wasteful lifestyle...."

"...Feel free to ask questions about our lifestyle, I would love to answer them in posts. We are EXTREMELY low-income (partly by choice), unschoolers (kids are 1.5 and 7 years), members of our local self-reliant and sustainability groups, and when we move we plan on trying out minimalism, or at least the 100-Thing Challenge. Oh, and my husband and I (though we are not "officially" married) have had a fantastic relationship over the last 5+ years of spending our lives together 24/7. And I had a homebirth. Damn, we do all sorts of different shit. Let me know what you'd like to read about..."

Byakuya was kind enough to ask a question! He is the author of Serenity Blogs: including RPG Index, Riot of Legends, Hilarious Images, and Serenity Anime.

He asked:

"Won't your children resent you for not having what most normal kids get at that age?
No offense intended, it's just if I had to grow up like that I wouldn't be friends with my parents, I would probably stop contacting them when I moved out."

I like being asked difficult questions and challenged and growing and learning and all that good stuff, so I really wanted to answer because it's a valid concern and I think a lot of people have it.

Will my children resent me? I can't really control how they feel about me, lol. All I can do is my best, and I think unschooling and minimalism is best. This isn't to say that we force them to do it.

Granted, once we are more on the minimalist side of things (we are not quite yet), they are probably going to have to have fewer toys than the average American. But they will still have toys, and we'll get the best quality we can. Even though we are trying to go moneyless, that doesn't mean we buy a bunch of Dollar Store junk.

We do our best to live by example, not only as an example to our kids, but as an example to others: Things can be done differently. You don't really need things that you feel like you need. That kind of thing.

We do our best to make sure our kids have lots of freedom and let them make their own decisions. We're not perfect at it, but perfection is an illusion anyway -- especially when it comes to parenting. It's interesting though, because our 7-year-old doesn't really realize he has a lot of freedom and kind of takes it for granted, so that's been an interesting thing to try to help him overcome.

We're still pretty new at unschooling (though technically we've been doing it for almost 8 years!) and we don't claim to really know what we're doing. We're constantly learning more, and I figure the best place to learn about homeschooling and unschooling is not necessarily from other parents (although they are a huge help) but from adults who had been homeschooled and/or unschooled. What worked for them? What didn't?

I was so excited to see that one of my favorite bloggers, Ev Bogue, was actually unschooled growing up, so I asked him what he had to say:

"Unschooling rocked.
Here's the two things that I think you need to think about to make it work.
1. The kids need to have uncontrolled ability to interact with the world. IE, no one watching over their shoulder. The most important things I learned were things that no one watched me do. The new world will be very different from the one that we're currently living in, you and I won't understand it but our kids will.

2. Many cities live in isolation. People living in boxes, unable to interact with anything but their TVs. This is sad, and I'm doing everything I can to fight it. There are cities that aren't like this. They're better for experiences. This is why Leo Babauta moved to San Francisco to unschool his kids, because there are experiences here. If you live in nowhere, your kids will end up nowhere. I know, it's hard to say, but it's true.

Anyway, hope that helps!
Everett"

That said, we are planning to hopefully move to Tacoma in the upstairs apartment of a home owned by a really awesome woman who's really active with the community and permaculture scene. The move is planned for a couple of months, and I am SO excited (even though it's certainly no San Franscico). There really will be a lot more resources and hopefully we'll be out doing stuff a lot more often. Although I do think unschooling could be pulled off really well anywhere - I agree, it probably is easiest in the city. Along with minimalism and living with not much money! Nothing like growing up in the 'hood. :D

Hopefully I answered your question, Byakuya! Let me know if you want to know more and I will share in the comments. :D

A List! :D

Joel Runyon has an awesome blog, Blog of Impossible Things. He made a list of things he found "impossible" and then set out to do them. He just announced his new website, Impossible League.

Why not do this? Seriously.

I gotta get started on my Impossible List. I have a few ideas already. :D

Do you have any sort of life bucket list? If I get enough links to your guys' lists, I'll make a post with all of them!!! :)

  • Here's Joel's Impossible List...
  • And the only other person I could think of (off the top of my head) who had a list is this other awesome chick,  co-founder of Shatterboxx - visit her blog at Nicole is Better -  and here's her list. :D

Getting Girlier Every Day....

On a whim, I decided to do my hair today. I might as well before I get rid of these curlers that are so rarely used. They take up a lot of space!  It would have looked better if I had washed my hair first, but I didn't feel like waiting for it to dry. My hair dryer caught on fire over a year ago and I never got a new one... >_< I'm becoming so girly though, I might have to get another one. :D  And MAKEUP! I am kind of against makeup, because I don't like fake. But I DO really love to play dress-up. :D And I have to practice being pretty for our wedding day potluck. :D

PICS!

anybody want these? i'm getting rid of them

hair before

oh  man i need to re-learn makeup :/

put the rollers in and THEN find the directions... hmmm

LOL i don't know what i'm doing... this is what it looked like when i took the rollers out

and done! yay :D

Music Monday :: dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip - "The Beat That My Heart Skipped"

When I first heard dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip, I didn't want to like them. I believe I was listening to Saul Williams radio on last.fm, and a lot of spoken word artists kept coming up. I like spoken word, but I can only take so much of it, you know? That, and I didn't really like the sound of Scroob's voice at first, I guess. But I got over that FAST - the words that came out of his mouth are more than worth it. Not that he's a spoken word artist. But really any sort of rap or hip-hop is not much more than spoken word, is it? It's not really singing...

Anyway, I am far from a pro on music, I just really like listening to it.

I'll just let this song speak for itself. If you like it, listen to more! "Thou Shalt Always Kill" and "Introdiction" are a couple I suggest. :D

Part of My Persona (I Forgot lulz)

I knew I was forgetting someone in last night's post! BUBBLES! :D

Certainly a very important aspect of My Persona.

What's your persona?

---

Also I wanted to share an awesome blog I found. You guys might already know of her, but Allebanna has a blog called These Things Are Relevant To My Interests. OMFG, she makes awesome T-shirts. And she apparently gives them away occasionally. :D This is one she made for a baby:

I just found her, so I'll have to stick around and see what other awesomeness she is capable of. :D

I wanna get in the habit of making more shout-outs to awesome people, because you guys deserve it. :D

Like right now I'm listenting to some tracks Electric Addict has shared. As I mentioned in my first Music Monday post, I've got a special affinity for music blogs. Electric Addict has the upper hand because he often posts songs with minimal lyrics. :D

My Persona

A few days ago I made a post - "How to Be Successful in Five Easy Steps (Or At Least A Pretty Good Cosplayer)" where I posed the question "What's your version of the ultimate person?" Perhaps I should have asked, "What's your version of the ultimate "you." So I figured I'd share my version of the ultimate "me" really quick. Keep in mind this probably changes multiple times a day, so it will probably never be the same for me again!

Tank Girl
+

ceiling cat
+

catwoman

+

random mythical anime goddess character

+
a little bit of Bruce Lee. Almost put the bride from Kill Bill here instead, but couldn't find a suitable photo

I think I had the idea to add a couple others, but it already started changing halfway through. So, this is actually a pretty rough picture of what the ultimate person/me is at this moment. Missing a lot though. Gives at least a general idea anyway. :)

Music Mondays

Okay so I know it's not really Monday.  That's how it goes here at Technicolor Typecast though! Monday was 2 days ago, and I'm still not ready for it. Ah well, here goes anyway.

Back in my heyday, I was quite the audiophile. I used to read (and I mean read thoroughly) a handful of music magazines and listen intently to songs for hours a day on a daily basis. So I have been loving these music blogs I keep running into by you guys. It's got me a bit nostalgic, and I'm jelly. I wanna have a music blog too, *hmph.*

I wanted to make my first Music Monday post about the album Plastic Beach by The Gorillaz. It's one of my favorite albums. I was going to mention my trip to the Unemployment Office. It was quite an experience.

But I'm just not feeling that today. I'm feeling Mos Def's Umi Says.

I've been in a funk for the last day or two. Frustrated with being such a completionist at life. I only feel like I do things right if I do them like they are the most important thing ever. Unfortunately it's actually physically impossible to do that with 1,436 things. That's got me bummed.

I love songs with lyrics like this one. They are just so real and refreshing. I don't really like fluff or depressing stuff anymore. Everything I do, I want to make myself and the world better. That includes listening to music. So it's been hard to listen to music with lyrics for the past few years. You really have to dig for positive influences. But wow, once you do the work, there are so many songs with beautiful lyrics.

Shine your light on the world.... Shine your light for the world to see...

How To Be Successful in Five Easy Steps (Or At Least A Pretty Good Cosplayer)

NUMBER ONE
Pick Your Persona

What's your version of the ultimate person? How do you envision yourself in your dreams? Take some time and think about it. Don't worry about whether or not it's possible or affordable. Just allow your imagination to do the work.

NUMBER TWO
Pretend

At first, just play with your imagination. Envision yourself as that ultimate person - how epic it is, how awesome it feels.

NUMBER THREE
Imitate

Next just carry yourself as if you are that person. Reptile doesn't have horrible posture. Goddesses aren't going to take shit from peasants and they deserve respect. Girls from Command & Conquer (I'm guessing?) don't eat at McDonald's or sit on their ass all day. Chances are the persona you picked has at least some self-control: Use that to help motivate yourself - whether it's some sort of training or keeping yourself from "just one more."

NUMBER FOUR
Refine

This can take as much time as you want it to. The more time you spend, the more successful you're likely to be. But don't get too caught up in perfection. Just play. Don't give up your day job (or your "day persona") just yet.  Get support from your friends, strangers on the internet, or groups in your area.

NUMBER FIVE
Take Off Your Mask

With all the hard work and dedication you've been putting into your persona, you can slip into it easily. No longer is this persona separate from the real you - they never were. This ultimate human being has always been a part of you - you just brought it out. Take off the "unsuccessful self" mask. You are now who you've always wanted to be.

-
