Q and A: Byakuya on Kids and Stuff

You may have read my "About Me" at some point... I post it almost everywhere. You might call it my "elevator pitch." It goes something like this:

"I'm an unschooling mom in pursuit of minimalist and (relatively) moneyless lifestyle."

I don't really talk about any of that much here at Technicolor Typecast - they are kind of difficult topics to address (and I kind of like having a little bit of a break here too :). What we're doing is actually really awesome though (in my opinion anyway), and I hope I get around to sharing more about it someday!

Back on the 3rd of July I wrote a tiny bit about what we've been doing and invited questions. Here's some of what I wrote:

"...Yes, we are a family of 4 living off of $800/mo (US$) plus whatever else we can scrape up! It can be done, and it doesn't have to be That Bad. We're kind of hoping to be an example for others to show you can "have everything" without a wasteful lifestyle...."

"...Feel free to ask questions about our lifestyle, I would love to answer them in posts. We are EXTREMELY low-income (partly by choice), unschoolers (kids are 1.5 and 7 years), members of our local self-reliant and sustainability groups, and when we move we plan on trying out minimalism, or at least the 100-Thing Challenge. Oh, and my husband and I (though we are not "officially" married) have had a fantastic relationship over the last 5+ years of spending our lives together 24/7. And I had a homebirth. Damn, we do all sorts of different shit. Let me know what you'd like to read about..."

Byakuya was kind enough to ask a question! He is the author of Serenity Blogs: including RPG Index, Riot of Legends, Hilarious Images, and Serenity Anime.

He asked:

"Won't your children resent you for not having what most normal kids get at that age?
No offense intended, it's just if I had to grow up like that I wouldn't be friends with my parents, I would probably stop contacting them when I moved out."

I like being asked difficult questions and challenged and growing and learning and all that good stuff, so I really wanted to answer because it's a valid concern and I think a lot of people have it.

Will my children resent me? I can't really control how they feel about me, lol. All I can do is my best, and I think unschooling and minimalism is best. This isn't to say that we force them to do it.

Granted, once we are more on the minimalist side of things (we are not quite yet), they are probably going to have to have fewer toys than the average American. But they will still have toys, and we'll get the best quality we can. Even though we are trying to go moneyless, that doesn't mean we buy a bunch of Dollar Store junk.

We do our best to live by example, not only as an example to our kids, but as an example to others: Things can be done differently. You don't really need things that you feel like you need. That kind of thing.

We do our best to make sure our kids have lots of freedom and let them make their own decisions. We're not perfect at it, but perfection is an illusion anyway -- especially when it comes to parenting. It's interesting though, because our 7-year-old doesn't really realize he has a lot of freedom and kind of takes it for granted, so that's been an interesting thing to try to help him overcome.

We're still pretty new at unschooling (though technically we've been doing it for almost 8 years!) and we don't claim to really know what we're doing. We're constantly learning more, and I figure the best place to learn about homeschooling and unschooling is not necessarily from other parents (although they are a huge help) but from adults who had been homeschooled and/or unschooled. What worked for them? What didn't?

I was so excited to see that one of my favorite bloggers, Ev Bogue, was actually unschooled growing up, so I asked him what he had to say:

"Unschooling rocked.
Here's the two things that I think you need to think about to make it work.
1. The kids need to have uncontrolled ability to interact with the world. IE, no one watching over their shoulder. The most important things I learned were things that no one watched me do. The new world will be very different from the one that we're currently living in, you and I won't understand it but our kids will.

2. Many cities live in isolation. People living in boxes, unable to interact with anything but their TVs. This is sad, and I'm doing everything I can to fight it. There are cities that aren't like this. They're better for experiences. This is why Leo Babauta moved to San Francisco to unschool his kids, because there are experiences here. If you live in nowhere, your kids will end up nowhere. I know, it's hard to say, but it's true.

Anyway, hope that helps!
Everett"

That said, we are planning to hopefully move to Tacoma in the upstairs apartment of a home owned by a really awesome woman who's really active with the community and permaculture scene. The move is planned for a couple of months, and I am SO excited (even though it's certainly no San Franscico). There really will be a lot more resources and hopefully we'll be out doing stuff a lot more often. Although I do think unschooling could be pulled off really well anywhere - I agree, it probably is easiest in the city. Along with minimalism and living with not much money! Nothing like growing up in the 'hood. :D

Hopefully I answered your question, Byakuya! Let me know if you want to know more and I will share in the comments. :D

Bianca Jagger

I just wrote this post (well more than this actually) on another blog I have just created... a blog that has something to do with the Giveaways I have in mind, to be exact. I'm still not releasing any information on that, and I'm withholding other exciting news as well. When the time is right, my friends. Although I'm sure this "other blog" wouldn't be too difficult to find. ^_~

Without further ado.. here is what I have written about Bianca Jagger - a beautiful woman and an inspiration, certainly in more ways than one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found, during a search on the internet, interesting pictures of the woman Mick Jagger married - Bianca Jagger - on a website called "Fashion's Most Wanted." (Please note that I don't normally follow fashion trends, much less celebrity fashion trends. I really respect and admire the artistic aspect of fashion, but absolutely detest the "pop" aspect. Once things go "pop," everyone seems to miss the point.) I'll share a couple of pictures I found from there~
What an interesting dress!
A picture of Bianca with one of her BFFs, Andy Warhol.
Bianca at her 30th birthday party, located at her favorite hangout, Stuido 54.
She rode to her birthday party (at Studio 54) on a white horse!
One of the things I'm most interested in here at Technicolor Typecast is optimizing happiness in life. One of the ways to do that is to think outside of the box, unlimited by social labels, and simply be your authentic self. And I've noticed a lot of public figures seem to do just that - that's one of the reasons why so many of "the rest of us" are so enamored with them. It can be hard to be your authentic self, especially in our society of working 9-5 and endlessly acquiring possessions. These beautiful people - who, for whatever reason, have been able to optimize their happiness - have become something of heroes to the general populace. For the record, I'm not saying all celebrities have done this - not by a longshot!
I became curious about this woman and decided to look at her Wikipedia page. The things this woman has done and is currently doing... it took my breath away! This was the primary reason I was compelled to write this - not that I don't love sharing beautiful pictures that inspire the sort of Wedding Party I dream of. But this woman seems amazing, and instantly became somewhat of a hero to me.
Allow me to quote Wikipedia~
"Bianca Jagger is a Nicaraguan-born social and human rights advocate and a former actress and fashion icon. Jagger currently serves as a Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador, Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, Member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA, and a Trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust. Over the past thirty years she has written articles and opinion pieces, delivered keynote speeches at conferences and events throughout the world and participated in numerous television and radio debates, about numerous issues including genocide, the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the war on terror, war crimes against humanity, crimes against future generations, the Former Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka, Central America, Iran, Iraq, India, children and women’s rights, the rights of indigenous peoples, climate change, the rainforest, renewable energy, corporate social responsibility, the ensuing erosion of civil liberties and human rights, and the death penalty.
She was formerly married to Mick Jagger, lead singer of The Rolling Stones."
I absolutely love how her marriage to Mick Jagger is such an afterthought. I could tell she was optimized. ^_~
The Wikipedia article mentions that she was born in Nicaragua, and for much of her childhood her family lived on a very small income. This furthers my personal suspicion that growing up in an environment that isn't saturated with money can create powerful, intelligent people. :) And not powerful in a greedy sense -- powerful in the sense of living up to your true potential.
Much of the rest of the Wikipedia page about her is interesting. Here is what it says about a key turning point in her life, when she started moving away from her party-goer/jet-setter lifestyle and began to focus more on Human Rights, and just issues that are important to our societies and our species in general~
"In 1981, Jagger was part of a US congressional delegation stationed at a UN refugee camp in Honduras. At one point during her official visit, the entire staff saw about 40 captured refugees marched away at gunpoint towards El Salvador by a death squad. Armed with nothing but cameras to document the raid, Jagger and the delegation trailed the squad along a river towards the El Salvadoran border. When both groups were within auditory range of each other, Jagger and the staff shouted at the M-16 equipped raiders, "you will have to kill us all!". The squad released its captives and a transformation had thus begun for Jagger."
What a beautiful person. She would be wonderful to interview someday. :)
Who tha fuck is Mike Dahlquist?
---
First, a word:
Omnipotent.
----
---
And now I would like to say, before I begin the post "for realz, yo:"  Fuck you comment system. Fuck you and your html shit. Don't you mock my lack of coding knowledge. HA. I fucking fixed you now. Stupid ass comment system shit.
(Let me know if my blog is looking retarded, I may have messed the coding up a little bit. ^_~)
----
Who. The fuck.  Is Mike Dahlquist?
MikeDiva a.k.a. Mike Dahlquist
I don't know. Somebody tell me, please.
I mean, I've been aware of his existence in the world for a while now, ever since back when he made a video for Mindless Self-Indugence's "Straight To Video" contest...
He calls himself MikeDiva on youtube, and I noticed he's in a band that's really similar to MSI. At least they are similar on my first impression. And, I mean, that's good... but I'm not really interested in listening to someone who sounds just like MSI when MSI already exists for when I want to hear something like MSI.
Are you following me?
And then I noticed when he made this video, which was really funny before he had to switch the audio tracks because of *copyright violation*. It's actually still interesting with the royalty-free song that he picked.
Well, it may have been funny, or maybe I just have a memory of it being awesome because of boobs.
Mr. Diva said, "EDIT: Jewtube took this video down because it used the song "Fergalicious", Videos of little girls singing this song in their bedrooms are okay, but apparently puppies and singing heads on breasts aren't.. Sooo I had to swap it with one of Youtube's shitty royalty free songs. Enjoy."
That youtube, always fuckin' with the videos...
Not too long ago, I went back to watch that "Straight to Video" video again, 'cause hey - I was in the mood to listen to MSI, why not watch an awesome video??
And then I noticed...
Sexy Sax Man.
This guy, Sergio Flores, apparently helped inspire the SNL digital short, "The Curse" (this was probably the beginning, but you have to admit Andy Samberg brings a certain something in the SNL video). Hilarious video; I think MikeDiva's is beast.
But then, today, I noticed that MikeDiva actually directed one of Mindless Self-Indulgence's more recent videos. I must be way the fuck behind the times, because it's apparently from 2009. =|  Gotta working on getting ahead of those fuckin' Jones's.
But anyway, this MikeDiva (a.k.a. Mike Dahlquist) guy went from being a runner up in a MSI contest to actually directing one of their videos? And it's a fucking badass video, too. Probably not the best video of mankind, but a pretty good fuckin' video. (And by the way, why do I not have this MSI album...? Why have I not been keeping up with this?! D=<)
Here's the excerpt with some funny behind the scenes footage:
And here's Mindless Self-Indulgence's full video for "I'm on Crack."
Wait.
Apparently it's by The Left Rights, but msivideo has the rights to the song? Looks like I have a new group to research...!
And apparently Asian people love gum.
So, enough with the videos. Back to the point.
Who the fuck is Mike Dahlquist??
This guy seems to be having TONS OF FUCKING FUN doing what he's magnificently good at, and he's probably making bank because of it. Isn't that what we all want to do? It for sure is what I want to damn do. Why is he so good? He obviously works hard as fuck. Puts up a new video every other Monday? I can hardly write a shitty blog post every day, I can't imagine making a video of the caliber I see on his youtube channel, even if it's only every other week... and to do that while simultaneously directing/co-directing other videos such as this??? Does he, like, pay someone to do all this shit for him???
In my quest to figure out who the fuck Mike Dahlquist is, I came across this Wikipedia page on Michael Dahlquist, where it states Mr. Dahlquist graduated high school the year I was born. Duh, he's older, that's why he's so fucking smart and successful. But he looks so young! Eh, must be the crazy stuff he wears.  Yep... he was in a band... Yep, he could talk his way into an imaging software job... Yep, it totally makes sense he's from Seattle.
Wait.  He died in a car accident in 2005!
Wait.....
That's not the fucking Mike Dahlquist I was looking for!
Shit!
I want to know who the fuck Mike Dahlquist is!
I do, however, think it's funny that the picture on MikeDiva's website is of him bleeding in the middle of the street, perhaps playing off the death of the other semi-famous person I ran into with the same name. Sweet and dark and funny all at the same time. =D
Maybe someday I'll get around to asking Mike who the fuck he thinks he is, or watch all his videos, or look on his MySpace page. (Fuck MySpace, I'm so over that shit. Although my MySpace page is still up. I should delete that someday.).
---
Fyi~ We didn't get that Tiny House. Didn't even get to see it! =(  Someone bought it with cash for the full asking price the night before we were going to take the 2-hour drive to see it. Dammit. At least I woke up early today?
I still need to do my fucking taxes.
